In 2017, Calgary introduced a Green Cart composting program and I was actually pretty excited to get composting - my husband and I were actually considering a back yard self compost, so I'm glad our city made the decision for us! And honestly, it feels really good to be able to see how much waste I'm diverting from landfills and it's so accomplishing!
Also, we get to pick up the city's compost for free and we always use it for out garden! So, I've been trying to make changes where I can (I know I'm not perfect - I have a long drive to work and love my air conditioning), but if I can make changes to counteract that, like switching to reusable cotton pads, using reusable bags and being less wasteful and recycling everything I can! But one of the hardest areas to make these changes are in my beauty routine - wasteful packaging and single use products are pretty prevalent in the beauty community. There is a movement to switch to more earth friendly products where possible, and I thought I would share some of the compostable products that I've come across!
Kaia Naturals The Vitamin Cleanse Wipes ~ $10.00 CAN for 10 wipes or $16.00 CAN for 30 wipes. The sustainable answer to single-use makeup wipes. Soaked in vitamins C, E, and B12—plus antioxidant-rich honey and skin-softening sunflower seed oil—these cleansing cloths remove makeup and impurities while refreshing your complexion. Crafted from 100% biodegradable and compostable unbleached bamboo, they're perfect for even sensitive skin, and can even be planted after use.
For at home, I've actually switched to cotton face pads for my skincare routine and I've really enjoyed that switch. But, I still do use face wipes for when I'm on the go or removing swatches, so I'm still just throwing out these wipes - I can't really think of how many of these I've gone through and it's pretty crazy that I just throw them out. And, while they seem small in the moment, they will add up, so why not switch to a compostable version?! (Also, I know the package of these aren't compostable, but I will recycle it).
First off these wipes smell amazing - they are so fresh! And, they were well soaked and removed face makeup and arm swatches well, including lipsticks. The only thing these didn't work great on was my mascara; that was still on. But, for what I use wipes for, I think these are worth using! Also, Kaia Naturals is a Canadian brand!
Patch Natural Adhesive Bandages ~ $11.99 CAN. Patch is Made from 100% Natural and Sustainable Bamboo. It is also Plastic, Latex & Toxin Free and 100% compostable.
I know that bandages aren't specifically "beauty" products, but they are certainly in the self-care range and they are something we all use! And seriously, with kids in the house we go through a fair bit here! Bandages are one of those things that again, even if they are small add up over time and the regular kinds do not break down. These Patch bandaids are made with 100% organic bamboo fibre with the added natural goodness of activated charcoal, aloe vera and coconut oil. (They even show you a time lapse video of the product breaking down!) I also love that the whole packaging is compostable as well.
And, the product itself works well - they adhere all the same and I had no problem with these staying on. If you get these wet they don't really stick; but, that's not something that bothers me! They also come in a light and dark shade as well as black and a panda print!
Lush Scrubee Body Butter ~ $7.95. This happy little bee looks innocent enough, but it means business when it comes to buffing your skin smooth. We've combined scrubby ground almonds and coconut shell with softening honey, cocoa and shea butter in alternating exfoliating and moisturizing stripes for the smoothest skin.
This is about more about the Scrubee (although you know I love me a Scrubee - I have been raving about this product for years) - it's about the whole Lush naked line, and really any brand that is making packaging free products. This is a scrub and body butter all in one. Lush has a whole line of naked products - face cleanser, serum, naked shower gels, shampoo bars - you name it. And, I know this isn't only for Lush products, there are plenty of brands coming up with packaging free products (and if I had more of them I would show them love too - if you have a favourite brand or packaging free product please share it in the comments!)
What I also really like about these though is that Lush uses paper bags for their products, so you can put these right in to the compost with no waste from these products!

Cheekbone Beauty is an indigenous female owned Canadian brand and they are working towards their brand being-carbon neutral. Their goal is to lead by example and be a fully waste free company by 2023! The owner, Jenn Harper's story is pretty inspiring and the brand is all about inspiring indigenous youth - Cheekbone Beauty also gives back to indigenous education initiatives in Canada.
This packaging is almost fully compostable and the only piece that is not compostable is the gold component in the middle and you just take the packaging apart, and the middle piece can be recycled!
I picked up the shade Keyah which is a peachy pink nude shade and it's gorgeous! Kéyah or KEE YAH also means "land" or "earth" in Dine Bizaad or Navajo Language.
The formula is super smooth and soft and Cheekbone Beauty has mentioned that the formula is made up primarily of raw ingredients - I'm not a great ingredient buff myself, so I can't really speak to that part of it! But, it's very comfortable to wear and the shade looks fantastic!
Here is a look at Cheekbone Beauty lipstick in Keyah on me - it's a very natural, my lips but better shade in a really comfortable formula. I thought this wore really well and for being a creaky formula it didn't move around while I ate, drank and played with the kids which is fantastic!
I know this is a small list in terms of brands that are using compostable and eco-friendly packaging - I had a wishlist to try more before Earth Day; however, the Covid situation happened and I have slowed down in my beauty consumption for the time being, so I didn't get to try them all, but it's certainly a goal of mine! I do hope more brands see the benefit of moving to more eco-conscious packing for their products when possible!

You what, we do the best we can when it comes to recycling and thankfully there are a lot more beauty brands that keep this in mind. If we REALLY wanted to be eco-conscious, then we wouldn't buy any beauty products at all because then there would be NO packaging at all, but that's not realistic to me! I love composting as well and was so glad that it became mandatory in my municipality. Did you know the MaskerAide sheet masks are compostable?! I was so excited when they told me!
ReplyDeleteI know, I'm trying to counteract my consumerism the best I can, so at least I can feel better about buying lots of beauty products when I know I can compost them or recycling! I did not know that, but so good to know!
