Five on Friday - November 24, 2023 ~ Moon of the Turning Leaves Book Review, November 2023 Owlcrate Subscription, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Movie, Across The Spider-verse DVD, and Monthly Declutter

Happy Friday everyone - I hope you all had a good week! It's been a little crazy around here, but I think at this point, I say that every week!

ONE

Moon of the Turning Leaves and Across The Spider-verse was sent as a review copy

I'm always happy when I have a good book to share, especially when that good book is Canadian! I read Moon of the Crusted Snow earlier this year and it was fantastic - it's modern dystopian, so realistic and super eerie. It takes place on a remote reserve in Northern Ontario and essentially the power shuts off forever and the people on the reserve have no idea what happens. The first book follows what happens immediately following the events and what the community does to survive. Then, this year we got a sequel, Moon of the Turning Leaves by Waubgeshig Rice and it's just as good as the first one!

This book takes place 12 years after the original story, and 10 years after the survivors go fully remote and live off-grid in the bush. This takes place though and food and supplies start to dwindle and the group needs to decide where to resettle in order to continue to thrive. We follow our characters as they venture beyond their home to see what's out there after having virtually no contact and no knowledge of what happened 12 year prior. I enjoy the writing style - it's eerie, but well written and lots of hope in there too. I found the start a little slow, but man did it pick up and make it so hard to put down! These were both 4 star reads for me, making them great books!

TWO

I just received my November Owlcrate subscription and this month's theme is "Perilous Travels" - each month the book Owlcrate includes is signed by the author and comes with a note from the author as well. They often have special edition covers just for the box, and they seem to include a lot of exclusive items just for Owlcrate, which is so fun! As a bookworm, I have been loving this subscription! (Also, I put everything away and didn't take a picture, so check out my instagram or youtube for the video!)

The item's included in this month's box are:
  • Book - What The River Knows by Isabel IbaƱez ~ This is a stunning book that is an immersive historical fantasy set in Egypt and filled with adventure, a rivals-to-lovers romance, and a dangerous race! This book has amazing stencilled edges, end papers, the works - it's signed, it's lovely and I can't wait to read it!
  • Yearly Reading Planner ~ I don't get many Owlcrate boxes any more, only when I'm interested in the books; but, I always try to get the November box because it comes with the reading planner and they are always amazing! This one has lovely gold edges!
  • Wooden Book Door ~ When they sneak-peeked an item from The Starless Sea, I knew I would love it! It is a little decor piece or book end and it's lovely with all the details!
  • Wooden Bookmark ~ This is a bookmark inspired by the Shades of Magic series and it has a lovely quote and a picture of Kell and Lila and it's lovely!
  • Card Wallet ~ This is a slim little card holder wallet that is perfect for throwing in a purse when low on space! I haven't read the series that it was inspired by, but it's still good.
  • Enamel Pin ~ The pins this year are all a gorgeous treasured tomes collection so they open like a book - this one is inspired by The Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkien and it's lovely!
If you are interested in signing up, Owlcrate is $35.99 US per month, plus shipping is $19.99 to Canada, so this worked out to just over $80 for me. I am planning on not receiving this box as often in 2023, as much as I love it, I'd rather just buy books I love and not have as much unnecessary things!

THREE

I went and saw The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and it was great! I thought the movie was well done and I really enjoyed it (just like the book!) I loved that it was an origin story that didn't necessarily make you feel for the villain, it's just watching his slow descent and see what started everything for Snow as well as the morphing of the Hunger Games!

FOUR

I forgot to share a little review of the Across the Spider-Verse DVD - I saw the movie in theatres when it was released in June of this year, and honestly, these are fantastic! The art in the movie is unparalleled and the details are just stunning! I love having a physical copy of our favourite movies since things go in and out of streaming sites, plus this one comes with a ton of extras and bonuses! Elliott and I have enjoyed watching all the extras, short clips and extra scenese, plus re-watching the whole movie again. It's so good - I cannot wait for the next one in the series!

FIVE

I don't have a ton of declutters lately since I've been more thoughtful about the products I've picked up. Both of these are good, just the wrong shades for me! The Cheekbone stick is one of my favourite products, but this one is too dark and I wanted to try the Makeup by Mario formula, but this was too light for me!

I hope you all have a good weekend!
