I've never used a water-based nail polish before, so I was very excited to be able to try a few of these Suncoat Water Based polishesSuncoat polishes was founded by a scientist who was looking to make a safe nail polish for her young daughter to use - the products are all water based (and approx. 70% water), non-toxic, environmentally friendly and designed to be the same quality as conventional nail polishes without the chemicals. They are all made without phthalate plasticizers, toluene, formaldehyde, acetates, alcohol, glycol ethers, FD&C dyes.

The products have expanded since then to include hair and makeup; but, they still stand on the ideal that "we believe beauty and toxic chemicals do not belong in the same sentence". The nail polish lines that I got to try included the base and top coat, the classic polishes, and the peelable polishes. The polishes are $12.00 CAN each in these lines and they do have a few other lines, including a younger "girl" line with smaller bottles at a lesser price point as well!

So, I've got a wear test of one of the polishes and swatches of all the others!

Suncoat Cotton Candy ~ cotton candy pink

This is the polish swatched immediately with 3 coats. I found the application a tad streaky to begin with, and a water based polish layers a little different than a "regular" nail polish, so I was a little concerned when I first applied this; but, I was pleasantly surprised!

This is how the Cotton Candy looked the following morning! Quite the difference from the original swatches, which were a little streaky; but, this polish totally evened itself out and ending up wearing really nicely on the nails.

This is how Cotton Candy looks after 3 days of wear, including house cleaning, laundry and a whole weekend full of activities! I used the Clear Base/Top Coat as a base and top coat and am really impressed that there is no wearing or chipping whatsoever (I can report that on day 4 as I'm writing this, they still look the exact same!)

So, just a note that as I swatch further colours, some may look a little streaky in the photos as they are instant swatches, so as they dry down they likely will even out really nicely like Cotton Candy did!

Suncoat Rose ~ a beautiful true pink

This polish is 2 coats and I love the colour of this pink! It's a perfect shade for Spring, and it's absolutely the next one I will be wearing out of this collection!

Suncoat Poppy Red ~ a bright, orange red

Again, this is 2 coats of Poppy Red and like Rose, I think the brighter the polish, the less likely it appeared streaky on me! I do think this could be user error as well, as I've never actually used a water-based polish before and it does apply a little different than I'm used to!

Suncoat Peelable Swan Lake ~ creamy white

I've also never used a peelable polish before, so this was interesting! This shade itself was one polish I couldn't quite get to work for me. Again, this was before I realized that it would settle in by the next morning. However, I did apply about 4 coats to get this opaque and it was streaky (could smooth out the following morning too as I did not test this particular shade!)

Suncoat Peelable Petal Blush ~ soft pink

This polish actually applied really nicely - this is 3 coats to build up the opacity. I did test the "peelable" too by running my hands under warm water and peeling! It came off rather easily; however, not in one clean go. It may be easier after it dries down and settles all together. But, I did like the idea of not having to use a chemical remover to take of my polish!

Suncoat Clear Base/Top Coat ~ combination base and top coat

This product also comes in a peelable version! This is a combination base and top coat and I'm impressed with the wear time of 4 days + with no chipping or peeling whatsoever, especially through housework and cleaning! I was also washing and sanitizing my hands extra as I had an eye infection and that didn't wear this down at all!

Suncoat Nail Polish Remover Gel+Cuticle Balm ~ $10.99 CAN. Sun Coats Nail Polish Remover Gel+Cuticle Balm is a plant-based nail polish remover gel plus cuticle balm dual cap, two products come complete in one compact tube.

This plant-based nail polish remover is a gel based product that is vegan and biodegradable. You apply a little to each nail, smooth it over, allow it to sit for a minute or two and wipe off. This worked really well with the water based polishes! I will absolutely use this every time - I really like the idea of a non-toxic remover! However, I had attempted previously on a very strong top-coated regular manicure and it took a lot of scrubbing to even budge that; but, this is certainly the perfect remover for your water based polishes!

Overall, I really liked these polishes! I will be honest and say that I was initially concerned while swatching some of the polishes that they were streaky; but, I'm glad I continued to wear them to see the wear time as I was impressed how they dried down and settled in! So, on that note, they might not be the best polish to throw on quickly before running out as they do need a little time; but, ended up looking really nice and wearing for a long time!

I love that they are Canadian, water based, safe for kids, non-toxic, environmentally friendly - I think they are doing a lot of great things! If you are concerned with the chemicals in your products and are looking for other alternatives, I would check Suncoat out! They are available on the Suncoat website, well.ca and more!

As always, make sure to check out Cosmetic Proof, Prairie Beauty Love, and Tea & Nail Polish to see their Earth Month manis!

  1. Poppy Red would be a beautiful shade for the summer months! Not sure how I feel about the other shades though, I'm very picky when it comes to nail polishes (I want them ultra opaque with a super smooth finish!).

    1. Yes, I love Poppy Red! I think it just takes getting used to with the formula; but, it is thinner for sure!

  2. I really like the poppy red, it is a very pretty color. I've never tried a water-based nail polish but it is really interesting how they settle and don't look the same the next day. What an interesting concept.

  3. Poppy red is my fave out of the bunch. I’m shocked at how professional your nails look. I do a horrible job at applying my own nail polish.
