Five on Friday - October 9, 2020

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all had a great week - I actually took off Thursday and Friday to spend some time with the family and it was really lovely. (It's a little worrisome about seeing too many people as Alberta's covid case numbers are on the rise, but we are just sticking to our immediate family).

Fall Reading List
Magic Lessons and Legendborn were sent as e-ARCs - this post contains affiliate links

I usually share my book themes of the month later; but, since we should all be spending our long weekend hunkered in and reading, I'm jumping in a little early! My Fall Reading list started with Fairytale retellings last month, and for October we are going full on Witchy Magical reads! They feel perfect for Halloween month, and I can't read anything too scary because I'm a bit of a wimp!

(If you are a bookworm too and are on Goodreads, I would love to connect - you can find my Goodreads here!) I really love seeing what everyone is reading - I will read every genre and am always looking for more recommendations! The Witchy reads I'm hoping to pick up this month are:
  • The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski ~ This one is a little less witchy and a little more magical, but it's about the main character who has to surrender the life they know in search of magic for themselves, but they have to work with an untrustworthy stranger! I think this sounds so good!
  • Legendborn by Tracy Deonn ~ This is a new book that is about the main character's magic being unlocked after she witnesses something and a mage tries to wipe her memory, and there is secret magical societies and a magical war on the way! This one sounds very interesting!
  • Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin ~ This is the first book in a trilogy where the main character has left her coven and fled to a city where witches are hunted; but, it sounds like she ends up married to a witch hunter, and I'm very intrigued to see how this one goes!
  • Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo ~ This is the first book in a trilogy that is part of the Grishaverse (that has a couple of other duologies set in the same place) and is about the main character who has a dormant magic awakened in her - she then gets to train with the "Grisha", her country's magical military elite and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling! I've heard amazing things about the Grishaverse and they turned it in to a show coming to Netflix soon!
  • Bone Crier's Moon by Kathryn Purdie ~ I received this earlier in an Owlcrate and it's perfect for October! This is about a Bone Crier who must kill the boy she is destined to love as a rite of passage to be able to use her bone magic and he is destined on vengeance for his Father!
  • Havenfall by Sara Holland ~ This has one of the most stunning covers I've ever seen! This book has been on my wishlist for a while and it takes place in the mountains of Colorado where the Inn at Havenfall, lies - something happens, a body is found, her uncle is gravely injured and she will do anything to uncover the truth!
  • Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Illustrator Wendy Xu ~ This is described as a "story of love and demons, family and witchcraft" where a witch runs in to her old school crush, who happens to be a werewolf battling a demon and they have to work together. I thought this was super cute - a story of magic, love, family and acceptance with great art and a good storyline! Very cute!
  • Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman ~ This is the prequel to the Practical Magic Series - previously The Rules of Magic came out as a prequel, but this predates that one and explains the start of the Owens women's curse - I loved the historical setting and really enjoyed the story. I did find this one a little slower than the other two and I think that may have something to do with the time setting, but also, I read this electronically and I'm still getting used to that! I loved this whole series though and would recommend it if you like witchy stories!
  • These Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling ~ The main character is an Elemental Witch, who has to keeps her magic a secret - she ends up having to team up with her ex and work together to get a Blood Witch who has been leaving traces of dark magic all over the town!
  • Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake ~ This is the start of a series about three sisters who must fight to the death to become queen. In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. This is so highly rated and I can't wait to read this series!
  • Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo ~ This is another more magical book, than witchy - but it's about the main character who is offered a spot at a prestigious school where she is tasked with monitoring the activities of the secret societies, who tamper with forbidden magic and raise the dead! Sounds perfect for October!
What are you planning on reading in October?!

TWO

I have been loading up on Fall and Winter gear and placed another Joe Fresh order! I picked up a pair of rain boots and a pair of basic black boots (can you believe I haven't found a pair I've like in these for years?!) and they are both great! And since I cleared out all my old jackets I replaced everything and needed some Fall/Spring jackets, so I picked up this windbreaker, pea coat and a fleece jacket.

THREE

I placed a little Etsy order from Pin and Ink Shop for these little Night Circus and Starless Sea stickers (have you noticed I'm rather obsessed with these books yet?!) But they are just cute for planners, books, etc.

FOUR

I just won this in an auction and I'm so excited! It's the Jillian Harris x Smash and Tess Romper in this adorable light pink! They were limited edition and of course, pretty expensive, but it's super cute. I know I'm showing new clothes that I've been picking up, but if I'm honest, my style is basically rompers and comfy pants so this was a really good find (and less that $50!) If you are interested in the dtyle, I just saw on instagram that they are releasing a few colours again soon!

FIVE

Alright, I have not been doing a Palette of the Week very often lately as I'm just not wearing enough makeup. So the last few I've used are the ColourPop Uh-Huh Honey palette (you can see a post with me using it here) and it's fine, not the most versatile palette, but  good. Then I used the Storybook Cosmetics Robin Hood palette and it's alright as well - you can see a look for a Shop My stash using some of the greens in it - it's good, but this range of the Storybook palettes isn't my favourite and I did declutter the Red Riding Hood one I got at the same time.
Then, I used all of my single shadows and I love these so much - there is too many to share posts but they are all pretty (and I did declutter a few that weren't great!). Then I used the new Pixi Beauty Eye Effects Rosette Ray palette and it's quite new so I'm excited to use it and share a review soon!

I hope you all have a great long weekend and have a safe Thanksgiving!
