Unique Sunscreens - Because SPF Should Be Fun!

I hope you all know by now, but if you don't, SPF is the most important part in your skincare routine - I use at minimum an SPF 30 everyday, but if I'm outside for any length of time it's typically an SPF 50.

The Skoah was received as part of the ambassador program and the Paula's Choice was received as a PR sample - this post contains affiliate links

I've got my few favourite SPFs that I keep on rotation,  but I always love to try new ones! This year I've certainly bene introduced to some unique sunscreens so I thought I'd share my thoughts!

I will preface this by saying a lot of these fun textured products are great in conjunction with other SPFs - while a powder or spray sunscreen boasts a high SPF, you also have to take in to consideration how each one is used!

Sun Bum Original SPF 45 Sunscreen Face Mist ~ $22.99 CAN. Sun Bum's refreshing SPF 45 Sunscreen Face Mist is the daily go-to for sheer, lightweight protection from the sun. Made to deliver sheer, lightweight protection from harmful UV rays, and to help relieve minor skin irritations and soothe sensitive skin, with calming Witch Hazel.

I've used the Coola SPF Setting Spray before and I enjoyed it - thought I'd try something new, so this is a really lightweight face mist and I thought it would be perfect for using as a refresher overtop of makeup on days I'm not able to full apply a liquid sunscreen again. Also, this one spells like fruit (banana I think) and it's so good!

To use, spray container liberally into palm and apply evenly to face and neck 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying. (I think spraying in to hands is just to not advise you to spray it on your face so not to get in to your eyes - I have applied it directly and it's fine!)

Skoah Dewlux Lotion 30 ~ $88.00 CAN. Lightweight anti-aging moisturizer. Dewlux lotion 30 packs a punch with co-enzyme q10 and lipoic acid for anti-aging, natural antioxidants from vitamins a, e and c, and sun protection from zinc oxide. Great for all skin types, including oily or combo sin types looking for an anti-aging moisturizer that isn't too heavy or rich.

Skoah has been reformulating all of their SPFs to be fully mineral (more reef friendly and responding to what their customers want), but what's great is that they've taken over a year to actually formulate the product to be incredibly wearable - it has no white cast and isn't heavy or thick at all.

Here's a look at the Dewlux 30 formula - absorbs so nicely and wears well. This lotion also has this fruit punch scent and I love that, perfect for everyday. I said up to, a full sun day needs an SPF 50 for me, but this will be a great every day SPF when I'm not out in the sun all day!

IDC Dermo Solis+ Fps 50 SPF in Light ~ $61.99 CAN.
Broad-spectrum mineral SPF 50 protection; protects the skin against UVA and UVB rays. Helps preventing premature skin aging signs caused by sun exposure. Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Convenient, easy-to-use brush applicator providing consistent, all-day protection. Mattifies skin and evens out skin tone. Its powder texture promotes absorption and regulation of excess sebum. Formulated with the Sun+ Protection Complex, providing more than sun protection. Tested under dermatological control.

I feel like I'm late to the powder SPF game - I have always used an SPF setting spray on days that I'm wearing makeup, but I'm especially interested in this as oil absorbing and mattifying on the skin on warm days!

Before using, tap the brush several times on a hard surface, with the closed cap facing down. In the morning, apply generously and evenly on the face in circular motion for 60 seconds, 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours. Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Don’t forget to apply on ears, neck and other areas exposed to the sun. (Again for me, a powder would not have enough SPF for me alone, but I will use this over top of makeup as my refresher!)

Paula's Choice Healthy Glow Invisible Sunscreen Oil SPF 30 ~ $39.00 US. Meet the SPF you’ll be excited to wear: a weightless formula that combines clinically proven protection from UV rays, blue light & free radicals with a radiant, dewy finish. Proven to protect from blue light & free radical damage. Antioxidant complex supports skin barrier. Sheer finish suitable for all skin tones. Use as the last step in your AM skin care routine. This sunscreen oil from Paula's Choice is new this year and limited edition - it's super unique!

This is a fun texture for a sunscreen - super unique. I do have combo/oily skin that tends to get pretty sweaty in the Summer and I find this to be pretty oily (duh I know), but it also took a while to absorb in to the skin and it left my face a little too dewy for my liking. On that note though, I think this will be great to use on the body for a little added glow!

Here's a look at the texure. For use as the last step of your AM skin care routine, apply liberally to entire face & neck, avoiding eye area. You may need to use multiple pumps for adequate coverage. We recommend at least 1/4 tsp for your face. Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Reapply at least every two hours if skin is exposed to sun.

I love the idea of so many different sunscreens coming out - I think the more approachable we make SPF, the more likely are everyone will use it all the time! What's your favourite SPF formula!

  1. The Paula's Choice Sunscreen Oil is definitely interesting, but I think I will stick with lotions. It did absorb on me after some time, but it was VERY dewy like you said!
