Time for a look at my April Monthly reads! Each month I share a quick look at the books that I've read with a little synopsis and my rating - anything that I love or is really intriguing, I will share a more in depth review on a different post!
I purchased everything in this post
So, in April I read 8 books with a mix of genres from romantasy to historical fiction. I love most genres, and I really want to keep my reads diversified this year! Also, I've been trying to read a mix of old and new books, and this month I'm right down the middle which is perfect!
I read only 1 physical books and listened to 7 audiobooks. Here's a quick look at all the books I read in the past month:
Sanctuary of the Shadow by Aurora Ascher ~ ☆☆☆½ - 3.5 stars. This is a romantasy book featuring a demon with a dark back story who wakes up knowing nothing. I liked the dark back story but I can see this not being for everyone - it had some spicy scenes given the genre and it was good.
The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This is an adult historical fiction with a few timelines all surrounding a lost bookshop and two people in modern day trying to find it - there are past letters for the previous timeline and I really enjoyed that. This was very bookish and I loved that!
Dare to Lead by Brene Brown ~ ☆☆☆½ - 3.5 stars. This is a non-fiction book all about leadership - I took a two day course about this material and I enjoyed the course. I've never read a Brene Brown before so the wording is a little weird, but the concepts are good and overall it was good.
The Girl in the Eagle's Talons by Karin Smirnoff ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This a thriller and it's book 7 in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series - this is the start of a new trilogy by a different author. I really enjoyed the original trilogy, but books 4-6 were good but they started getting pretty outlandish! This felt closer to the original series, it was still a little wild with family and political layers, but it was high stakes and a page turner!
A Haunting in Venice by Agatha Christie ~ ☆☆☆ - 3 stars. This is a murder mystery and one of the original books in this genre - I don't know why this was renamed from Halloween Party since that is much more fitting to the content, but I thought this was good. I liked the set up but I thought the reveal was just okay!
The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This is a historical fantasy set in the Spanish Inquisition - this is a timeline I'm not incredibly familiar with, so for me I enjoyed the setting and the gothic vibes the time brought with it. This features a servant who is found to be using magic and the family she works for tries to up their status by using her, but she ends up swept up in to a magical competition as well in to a little more with a mysterious "familiar" - I liked the tension and could have delved in to that a little more, but over all, I enjoyed this!
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. Another murder mystery and this one I really enjoyed - it felt like Clue on a train. There is a good formula to Agatha Christie and I enjoyed how methodical this was in unravelling the story through interviews. The ending isn't for everyone and it was interesting, but I do like that it was unexpected!
Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi ~ ☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This is an adult magical realism book - it surrounds a coffee shop that allows patrons to travel in time should they wish with some very specific rules, the most important being finish the coffee before it gets cold and that's the timeline. Personally, I don't love time travel, so I like that this is very specific and the four stories we saw here were all emotional and lovely and handled really delicately and I thought it was so good!
April was overall a good reading month - mostly good reads for me this month!
Here's a little refresh of my rating system:
5 Stars: Excellent/Fantastic/Amazing Read
4.5 Stars: Really Great Read
4 Stars: Great Read
3.5 Stars: Really Good Book
3 Stars: Good Book
2.5 Stars: Eh, It was Okay Read
2 Stars: Finished it, but Didn't Enjoy It
1.5 Stars: Not Good at All
1 Star: DNF (Did Not Finish)
What was the best book you read this month?! For me, it had to be Before The Coffee Gets Cold!
