I'm a big fan of Cherie Dimaline - she is an Indigenous Canadian author and I've really enjoyed her writing style. She wrote The Marrow Thieves in 2017 - it is a young adult dystopian novel and it is set in a future where the world has been ravaged by global warming and people have lost the ability to dream - the only people left with the ability to dream are Indigenous people and the cure potentially lies in their bone marrow, but this means death for the unwilling donor, so Indigenous people are being hunted and we follow a young man, and a group of people who are on the run and trying to find their loved ones.

The author noted that she originally was not going to make it a series, but so many people reached out wanting to know what happened to the characters, so she published the follow-up novel, Hunting By Stars in October 2021 and it is fantastic. I won't share much of the synopsis to avoid spoilers if you haven't read the first book, but it takes off right from the end of the Marrow Thieves and it keeps you on your toes the whole book - you are rooting for these characters and they go through so much!

While this is a dystopian novel, it really touches on themes that are still true today - they speak to the past and the impact of residential schools and families dealing with this, but it also it touches on how a group of people can be targeted and singled out and how quickly it can turn people on a whole group of people. It very much touches on climate change and how we are treating the planet. I love the characters in the book and this found family theme is fantastic - it is hard to read, but still remains hopeful. Our characters face really difficult choices and touches on the extremes we would go to for the ones we love. I read The Marrow Thieves in 2018 and really enjoyed it - I rated it 4.5 stars, then I read this one in late November 2021 and rated it 5 stars. It is a fantastic dystopian series and everyone should read it!

TWO

I'm a big fan of Julie Van Rosendaal - she's a local Calgary chef and she's a regular on the radio I listen too. I love that her recipes are really flexible and she offers lots of substitutes and makes it really approachable! She recently published Cookies I Have Loved and it's exclusively available through independent book stores and Julie's site (which all come signed if you order from there plus free shipping!) Plus, $1 from each sale will go to community based food initiatives!

Also, I decided to pick up a few Owlcrate exclusive books - usually I don't mind if book editions don't match but I loved that Bone Crier's Dawn came with sprayed edges and When Night Breaks has a beautiful print on the hardcover with no cover! So, I love both of these!

FOUR

Alright, this might be my last "Palettes of the week" feature - I think I will probably do this less formally next year! But, the past few week's I've been reaching for the Urban Decay Naked Reloaded Eyeshadow Palette and this is one of my past favourites, I still love it! Then I was using the Colourpop The Secret Life Of Scorpio Shadow Palette - this one is good, but it's not my favourite formula from ColourPop; it's just good. Then, I was reaching for the Sydney Grace x Temptalia Eye Palette - Quintessence Light - this is a really pretty palette and the shimmers are sooo pretty! And, I used the Natasha Denona Zendo Eyeshadow Palette because I love this palette so much - it's a go-to palette!

FIVE

Have you guys tried Hurraw! lip balm yet?! I feel like I've just seen these everywhere lately and I haven't tried them out yet - so I picked up a few different flavours to try!

I hope you all have a great weekend!
