Dyson AirWrap Styler - Volume + Shape Set

It's finally time for my long anticipated review of the Dyson Airwrap Styper! I have been looking forward to putting this review together for a few months now - I picked this up back in January, but this baby is pricey so I wanted to make sure that my review was thorough and I had lots of chances to try it out before coming to my final conclusions about it!

Also, spoiler alert - if you saw my April Monthly Favourites, then you know this made it and I love it!

Dyson AirWrap Styler - Volume + Shape Set
I purchased this all by myself (with the assistance of points)

I have to preface this review in that I did not pay full price for this set - it is sold at Shopper's Drug Mart Beauty Boutique and I saved up $500 worth of PC Optimum points (the maximum you can redeem at a time) and waited until they had a "Spend Your Points" event, so I got an extra $100 off, saving me $600 on this! It was my best purchase with points and even the lady at the till was pretty excited for me!

So, please keep that in mind, I'm talking about something super pricey that I had been specifically saving my points to purchase, so I'm not sure if this would be the same if I shelled out all cash for it. But, if you are a Superstore grocery shopper or have a PC mastercard, you can add up your points fairly regularly, so it's an option to consider!

Dyson AirWrap Styler - Volume + Shape Set

Dyson AirWrap Styler - Volume + Shape ~ $649.99 CAN. The Dyson Airwrap hair styler applies the Coanda effect - to style hair without extreme heat. The Dyson Airwrap Hair Styler Volume + Shape is engineered to add volume and shape to limp, flat hair. Volume + Shape includes barrels to curl or wave hair, and brushes to smooth or volumize.

I was not able to get the Complete Set, which comes with two more attachments then the Volume + Shape set: a pair of 40 mm curling barrels and a firm smoothing brush (which is $699.99 CAN) - it was sold out, or I probably would have went all in to try them all.

But, I wasn't sure how the curling attachments would work, so I was comfortable with just trying out a set with the 30 mm curling barrels. There is also a Smooth + Control set for the same price that comes without the round volumizing and firm smoothing brush, for the same price as this one. But, I do have thin, fine, straight hair, so I thought this set would be the best! (They did not have the long barrel options in the store I was at, but I do have pretty long hair, so I would have considered it if it were available.)

The Airwrap comes with a big storage case, which is pretty great because she's hefty with all of her attachments - the actual styler itself is nice and light though! The styler has 4 heat settings (3 heat and 1 cooling), plus 3 different speeds.

Also, it comes with a guide book for each attachment, which I typically throw out for most products, but actually used and still reference for this one - it's a bit of a learning curve for sure!

There are certainly a few attachments that I've used the most (hello, Soft Smoothing Brush), and some that I've used the least (Round Volumizing Brush), but I will go through each attachment and share my thoughts!

Dyson Pre-Styling Dryer ~ Takes hair from wet to damp, ready for styling.

One of the things I didn't know about the Dyson Airwrap was that it is a damp hair styling product. This smaller version of the dryer is meant to be a quick first step to speed up the styling process so your hair is damp and ready for the next tools.

This is easily my most used attachment - I always dry my bangs and do a quick dry of my hair after the shower or bath, even if I don't have time for styling. I have a big Chi dryer and it's heavy, so this has totally replaced it - it's light and lovely to use. (Also, I have super fine hair so this is basically fine to use as a regular dryer on my hair!)

Soft Smoothing BrushCreates a smooth, blow-dry finish. Engineered to be gentle on the scalp.

Okay, this will easily win as my most used and favourite attachment - I know it sounds so simple, and I have a round brush blow dryer that I really love, but this is better than anything like that I've tried!

This take under 10 minutes to do my whole head (again, remember thin, fine straight hair - yours may take longer), but it was actually so gentle and makes my hair look amazing. Less frizzy and more smooth than straightening it, and actually healthier and fuller if that's even possible!

Here is my hair using the Soft Smoothing Brush attachment - seriously, this is pretty straight hair perfection and I'm loving the results of this one!

Round Volumizing Brush ~ Engineered to give body and shape to limp, flat hair.

This was the attachment I struggled with the most - I struggled with the bristles and my long hair getting tangled in them. If this included some bristles similar to the smoothing brush, I think my experience would have been a lot better, but I just think my hair was too long to get this to my roots and then through the length of my hair in one go.

This took about 15 minutes from start to finish (not including my quick pre-dry with the dryer) - I am still figuring out how to best use this and think it is likely better as targeted to just my roots.

Dyson AirWrap Styler - Volume + Shape Set

Here is my hair using the Round Volumzing Brush attachment - it still looks nice, but it's certainly not as smooth or shiny as with the Smoothing brush and I just prefer the overall look of that one.

30mm Airwrap Barrels ~ Create voluminous curls or waves with the Coanda effect.

These barrels come in a set of two, one facing each direction, so you can either curl both sides of your hair to go in the same direction, with opposite barrels or mix and match throughout the drying process. I've done both and like the effect of both - Dyson recommends alternating them for a more casual curl, so that's mostly what I've been doing. This takes 30-40 minutes alternating barrels as I go, so not a terrible length of time, but not something I have time for regularly - it is perfect for a "night out" whenever that is allowed again!

I do like these - the effect is pretty instantaneous, but I will be honest, my fine, thin hair isn't getting 3 day curls like some reviews I've seen. Not that I think they aren't being honest, but this hair does not hold a curl at all - I've tried it all and it just is so difficult. So, these are still the best curls I've ever gotten, they just last one day and are flat after that. I have been trying to use a curl mousse before and it's been helping, and also considering a texture spray after to help too (haven't tried it yet, but I will if I ever need to curl my hair to actually go anywhere!)

Dyson AirWrap Styler - Volume + Shape Set

Here is my hair using the 30mm Airwrap Barrels - I love the results of this. So, it does take longer than I typically spend styling my hair, but it's the best curls I've ever gotten. I've alternated the barrels as I went on both sides and then lightly combed my fingers through (if I were to brush this out they would be gone).

I also wanted to show a little before and after with the 30 mm Airwrap Barrels - on the left is how my hair looks just after I've curled them, without styling or running my hands through the curls. And, on the right is how they look at the end of the day, so certainly flatter but still with some curl in there!

So, I will be honest - I love this. It's hard to answer the question "is this worth the money" that I've asked a few times, and if I invested in this, I would not be disappointed in the results and use I've been getting. Is it even better if you can get it on sale or even with a few points to help, for sure! I have never been a big hair person as it doesn't do much, so the fact that this can get a curl to hold, be a blowdryer, and be the best smoothing brush I've ever used, for me the results are worth it!

But, I love it so much, I've actually bought myself the bigger 40 mm curling barrels and I picked them up in the long version (they have been sold out on Dysoncanada.ca forever and just came back in to stock as I was writing this post!) so naturally, I will share my thoughts on those, whenever I get them and try them out!

Have you splurged on a hair product like this before or would you consider it?!

  1. I have the Dyson Airwrap as well, but I paid for the same kit you have at Nordstrom's Winter Sale and the only thing I really love is the smoothing brush and the "pre-styling" hair dryer. The round brush is a nightmare to use and while I love watching my hair curl around the Airwrap barrels, it takes too long to curl my whole head. It took me 20 minutes vs 6 minutes using my GHD flat iron AND the curls don't last more than the day on my even with hairspray (my hair is thick and coarse). With a flat iron, I have curls for 3 days when I don't wash my hair. I still love it, but I think I only love it because it's Dyson and super cool, but practically I don't use it as much as I should.

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't use the round brush well, but for what I paid, the smoothing brush is next level. I can see if you have a faster way that your hair holds curls, this wouldn't be ideal, unless the low heat damage is important?! I could never get the flat iron to work for me at all!
