I purchased everything in this post
So, in September I read 10 books with a mix of genres from dark fiction to cozy mystery. I love most genres, and I really want to keep my reads diversified this year! Also, I've been trying to read a mix of old and new books, and this month had a good mix of both!
I read 1 physical books and listened to 5 audiobooks. Here's a quick look at all the books I read in the past month:
Never Whistle at Night by Various Authors ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. An Indigenous horror and dark fiction short story anthology - I've always said I sometimes struggle with short stories and ambiguous endings, but when it's explained by means of cultural teachings and leaving it up to the listener, I can be a little more accepting even though I typically like my stories wrapped up nicely. This is a great mix of well known authors as well as newly published and the stories will have something different for everyone - I like this mix of dark fiction where somethings that keep me up at night won't scare another reader and vice versa. Some standouts for me were Kushtuka, White Hills, Snakes Are Born in the Dark, The Prepper, and Collections but the rest were good too!
In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire ~ ☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This is the fourth book in the Wayward Children series, a YA Fantasy series surrounding a home for wayward children, or children who have returned from portal worlds only to be unable to live in regular society. This is Lundy's origin story, her portal story to The Goblin Market. I enjoyed this story and the world with fair market value for everything! Dark and weird and delightful!
The Maid by Nita Prose ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. I would call this an adult cozy mystery! This was a fun read - a mystery surrounding our quirky main character, Molly the Maid, who finds a very important man dead in the hotel room she is cleaning. She gets swept up in a much bigger plot and finds herself in a bit of trouble. I loved the characters and knowing what else was happening but waiting for our main character to put it all together too!
Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli ~ ☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. A YA romantasy that had me hooked and kept me up late wanting to know what happened next! It doesn't get any more high stakes and enemies to lovers than a witch hunter falling in love with the Witch he is hunting and her putting herself in that position. I loved the tension and there was so much going on with the characters. I cannot wait to read the second one!
Song of the Six Realms by Judy I. Lin ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. A YA standalone Fantasy novel - it's a really pretty book surrounding the Celestial world through dreams and memories, but also demons and monsters! I was a little confused with the realms and a few similar sounding things, but I liked it overall!
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This is the start to The Winternight Trilogy - a YA fantasy set in Russia with Winter demons and spirits that only a few people can see, our main character being one of them. This causes concern of course, and as her step-mother tries to stop her helping the spirits, bad things start to happen in the village. I thought this was so atmospheric and an easy read. Excited to see where else this trilogy goes.
September was a really good reading month! Here's a little refresh of my rating system:
5 Stars: Excellent/Fantastic/Amazing Read
4.5 Stars: Really Great Read
4 Stars: Great Read
3.5 Stars: Really Good Book
3 Stars: Good Book
2.5 Stars: Eh, It was Okay Read
2 Stars: Finished it, but Didn't Enjoy It
1.5 Stars: Not Good at All
1 Star: DNF (Did Not Finish)
What was the best book you read this month?! For me, it had to be Heartless Hunter!
