Monthly Reads ~ August 2024

Time for a look at my August Monthly reads! Each month I share a quick look at the books that I've read with a little synopsis and my rating - anything that I love or is really intriguing, I will share a more in depth review on a different post!

Monthly Reads ~ August 2024
I purchased everything in this post

So, in August I read 10 books with a mix of genres from adult romance to YA fantasy. I love most genres, and I really want to keep my reads diversified this year! Also, I've been trying to read a mix of old and new books, and this month had a good mix of both!

I read 3 physical books and listened to 6 audiobooks and read 1 e-book. Here's a quick look at all the books I read in the past month:

A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston ~ ☆☆☆½ - 3.5 stars. Ashley Poston's adult romances always have a unique flair to them and I love that! This one is about our main character who gets lost in the fictional town that her favourite romance series is set in. I loved the setting and the characters - it was corny and a little over the top, but in a way that doesn't take itself too seriously and it's what you would expect if you were in a fictional town. I love that her romance books have that touch of magical realism and I thought it was a cute read overall!

The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst ~ ☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This is a cute, cozy fantasy novel! It takes place as our main character is fleeing an uprising in the city and she gets on her boat with some spell books she wants to keep safe and her helper, a sentient spider plant. With nowhere else to go, she flees to her home island where she plans on staying to herself so no one should find out what she has. But of course, there are neighbours and people start showing up in the island so they have to band together and make a living! It was a great story!

Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This is a YA Contemporary fiction classic. The third book sees Anne go off to college - she comes home on breaks. I always enjoy Anne's outlook and the friendships are sweet. It might be where I end my reading of Anne of Green Gables series because she will move away soon as I just loved Anne as a young girl.

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire ~ ☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This is the third book of the Wayward Children series (a YA fantasy series around children who have gone to portal worlds taking solace in a home for the wayward children). It has us meeting a mermaid, a characters child and us going in to a nonsense world to save one of them! I love this series and this was weird and delightful!

84, Charing Cross Road by Helen Hanff ~ ☆☆☆ - 3 stars. This is a non-fiction book written in letters back and forth from a bookseller and buyer across seas and their love of books sees a friendship forming. This was okay for me, I think I wanted a little bit more out of it and the ending was a little lacklustre for me.

Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. I really enjoy this author's writing and this is classified as a YA Mystery, but it's so much more than that! The themes that are touched on - bringing ancestors home, MMIW, and more while solving a mystery is great. I thought the ending was a tad rushed, but overall this was a great read and Angeline Boulley will be an auto read author for me!

Crucial Conversations ~ ☆☆☆½ - 3.5 stars. This is a non-fiction that I wanted to read after doing a training course on the topics. I enjoyed the course as you practice some of the concepts in the book. But, this is a foundation for good skills during tough conversations.

Experienced by Kate Young☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This was a good, easy romance read. We meet our main character, newly out, whose girlfriend decides that she wants her to take a 3 month break so she can go experience the dating scene before settling down. Of course, it doesn't go to plan, but our main character does discover herself, friendships and perhaps love along the way!

I also read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with my little guy (I don't rate these since the author is terrible, but we love the universe!)

August was a really good reading month! Here's a little refresh of my rating system:

5 Stars: Excellent/Fantastic/Amazing Read
4.5 Stars: Really Great Read
4 Stars: Great Read
3.5 Stars: Really Good Book
3 Stars: Good Book
2.5 Stars: Eh, It was Okay Read
2 Stars: Finished it, but Didn't Enjoy It
1.5 Stars: Not Good at All
1 Star: DNF (Did Not Finish)

What was the best book you read this month?! For me, it had to be The Spellshop.
