Monthly Reads ~ June 2024

Time for a look at my June Monthly reads! Each month I share a quick look at the books that I've read with a little synopsis and my rating - anything that I love or is really intriguing, I will share a more in depth review on a different post!

Monthly Reads ~ June 2024
I purchased everything in this post

So, in June I read 9 books with a mix of genres from adult romance to YA fantasy. I love most genres, and I really want to keep my reads diversified this year! Also, I've been trying to read a mix of old and new books, and this month I'm pretty close to that!

I read 1 physical book, 1 e-book, and listened to 7 audiobooks. Here's a quick look at all the books I read in the past month:

The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren ~ ☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This is an adult romance and it was so good! The premise of a fake marriage and it taking place on a private island in Indonesia for an extreme over the top wedding for money was a great set up. I loved the setting and our main characters were funny and their dynamic was so good. Add some layered family dynamics for tension and I loved everything about this one!

This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This was such fun adult Summer romance! This is the third Carley Fortune book I've read and they just keep getting better and better! This had an amazing PEI setting and it makes me want to go back for sure. The premise is that our main character has a worldwind night on the island, until she finds out it was her best friend's brother and now she's trying to stay away - their tension is amazing and the friendships are so great. Our best friends are keeping some secrets from each other and that part was a little tough, but it adds to the layers of this book!

Medusa by Jessie Burton ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This is a historical fiction based on the greek mythology retelling -  it is a true retelling in the sense that it was not what I was expecting - the story Medusa really deserved and I enjoyed that! It's a quick, easy well written read!

Bring Me Your Midnight by Rachel Griffin ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This is a YA Magical Realism book - I love that Rachel Griffin's book have all been great witch stories with a heavy focus on atmosphere, setting and nature - I loved the themes throughout and enjoyed the story. I did think the ending was a little rushed, but overall I thought it was good!

Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers ~ ☆☆ - 2 stars. This sounded like it was supposed to be an adult romance - but read like a YA fiction of some self discovery, but our main character was 28, just got her PHD and maybe should have handled things better. It was too juvenile for the age/content (and I like YA), so it just wasn't what I wanted and it's probably the worst book I read this year.

Love & Other Poisons by Silvia Moreno-Garcia ~ ☆☆☆ - 3 stars. Making my way through this author's back list and this is an old collection of fantasy short stories - some high fantasy, some magical realism. Varying lengths and some better than others. Mostly okay stories for me!

Lies and Weddings by Kevin Kwan ~ ☆☆☆☆ - 4 stars. This was an adult contemporary novel with good romance - I loved this - Kevin Kwan can do these over the top complex, ultra rick characters with intricate relationships like no other! It was funny and wild and over the top - exactly what I love from this author!

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. I have been wanting to read this YA Fantasy novella series for a while now and I'm glad I finally did. We meet our main character as she arrives at boarding school where she finds out it's a special school for teens who have crossed over to alternate worlds and have come together as a reprieve as they cannot function at home or their families aren't accepting of them. When something happens at the school, they need to figure out who is hurting the children and keep the school open. This was a little darker and weirder than I thought it would be based on the premise and I loved it for that, a little unexpected, great premise and can't wait to read more!

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire☆☆☆☆½ - 4.5 stars. This is the second book in the Wayward Children series and this solely follows Jack & Jill's portal story. This does start with a sad childhood and what led them to finding their door - when they go through it and what happens. I enjoyed the setting and their dynamics, but ultimately how they made it through their world and back.

June was a great reading month! Here's a little refresh of my rating system:

5 Stars: Excellent/Fantastic/Amazing Read
4.5 Stars: Really Great Read
4 Stars: Great Read
3.5 Stars: Really Good Book
3 Stars: Good Book
2.5 Stars: Eh, It was Okay Read
2 Stars: Finished it, but Didn't Enjoy It
1.5 Stars: Not Good at All
1 Star: DNF (Did Not Finish)

What was the best book you read this month?! For me, it had to be The Paradise Problem!
