Manicure Monday - Mini Egg Nails!

Well if anyone saw my comment on Instagram yesterday, I clearly didn't get around to my Manicure Monday:

I have been trying to get back in to my regular routines, but last week was a little rough for me and I am still trying to play catch up! So instead of nail painting, I enjoyed a family dinner and an early to bed night (it was worth it!).

2015 Color of the Year: Marsala Eyes Makeup Look

I think it's really neat, that every year there is a designated "Color of the Year"! I have decided that I will do a monthly post with the color of the year - make-up, nails, etc! You can view my past Color of the Year post's here.

2015's Color of the Year is Marsala - and is described as a wine red with brown roots!

This is not a normal color I wear, so it has been a bit of an adjustment for me to find ways to wear it! It has been fun going out of my comfor

First, I feel like I need to defend that you do not need to buy the Sephora+Pantone makeup to incorporate the color in to your routine! It is okay to use other similar colors as a means to inexpensively incorporate the Color of the Year in to your routine!

Today, I am going to show you a Marsala eyeshadow "day look" using the Coastal Scents Revealed 2 palette:

Skincare Sunday - Baviphat Strawberry Toxifying Mask Product Review

I am going to start making my "Skincare Sunday" posts with a little more variety - for starting it up, I really wanted to show my routines and some easy how-to's. Now, I am going to start adding extra product reviews in to the mix as well (there will still be routines and how-to's, just want to see more variety here!).

If you are a regular reader, then you probably already know, I have a slight obsession with face masks of any kind! I use them minimally twice a week (usually a fair bit more often!). If you haven't seen my nightly skin care routine post, you can view it here to see where you should incorporate masks in to your nightly routine!

Sometimes I have no better reason for purchasing a product, except that the packaging is too cute to resist! That is the sole reason I selected this gem:

Baviphat Strawberry Toxifying Mask ~ $15 - $20. A Strawberry?! I die, how cute is this thing?! I decided whatever it was, I had to have it!! And even better when it turned out to be a clay mask!

March 2015 - Birchbox Canada Sample Beauty Subscription Box Review

This post contains referral links

Birchbox is the original sample beauty box and has been in the U.S.A. since 2010 - and this is only the 4th month it has been available in Canada. It is $10 a month + $4.95 shipping to Canada (you can save money by signing up for a year for $100 + shipping costs). Each month you receive 5 sample (or full size) products based on a beauty profile you complete.

Birchbox Canada describes itself as:
"Five personalized beauty samples delivered right to your door each month. It’s the best way to find the products you’ll love."

(It should be noted that if you see the U.S. Birchbox - Canadian's receive different products. I hope this expands and we get access to all the products available to out American counterparts soon! I like that some boxes (such as Ipsy and Glossybox) offer the exact boxes to Canadians - I am hoping Birchbox does the same at some point!)

Here is the March 2015 Birchbox Canada:

This month it came in a regular box; here is look inside:

Wine + Mask Wednesday - Jam Jar Sweet White Wine and Velieve Vita Shining Girlish Mask

Well this Wine + Mask Wednesday could not have come at a better time - I have literally had one of the worst days ever (I will save my readers the details, life just throws some crazy curve-balls once in a while!) Not that I promote drinking as a means of coping, but 1 glass is just fine!

I usually have a theme for my wine and mask pairing - this week the theme is going to be "after a rough day"! I know this doesn't tie my 2 products in very nicely, but I thought both of them would be a quick pick-me-up!

The Wine of the Week is:

Jam Jar Sweet White ~ $12. This is a South African wine:
"This charming, easy-drinking Moscato offers flavors of peach, apricot, lychee and orange blossom. A lively jolt of acidity keeps it fresh and fruity. Fancy enough for a special occasion toast, yet sweet-natured enough to enjoy every day, this bright and cheerful white wine is sure to capture your heart."

  • Formula X Nail Cleanser and Base Coat

March 2015 Mask Genie - Mask Pouch Review

Mask Genie is a newer all mask subscription service - started in January 2015!

Mask Genie offers 2 different pouches:

  • 5 masks for $12
  • 10 masks for $22
The price for each pouch includes worldwide shipping!

This subscription is a little different - you do not have a re-occurring subscription, you just email when you would like the next month! They do not have a subscription website, it is through the Facebook page.

*As I was writing this, I saw that Mask Genie just started her website - she will only take e-mail orders now until March 28!

I ordered the 5 mask pouch for March:

It came in a little pink organza bag!

March 2015 Topbox - Canadian Sample Beauty Subscription Review

TopBox is a Canadian Beauty Box Subscription - for $12 CDN a month with free shipping, you will receive 4 deluxe sample size or full size products. You fill out a beauty profile and generally receive products based on what you have identified in the profile. Also, every month you have the option to wish for a "prive" box. A prive box is a box that focuses on one brand or product for the whole box.

TopBox is a Canadian company and only ships to Canada. The only downside to subscribing to TopBox is that there is a wait-list that can take a month or two to get off of.

For March, I "wished" for the Philosophy Prive Box - a "wish" for a prive box is not a guarantee you will get it!

Here is a look at my March TopBox:

It always comes in the same purple mailer! Here is a look inside:

Wine + Mask Wednesday (Lock & Worth Cabernet Franc Rose & Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask)

Yay - time for another Wine and Mask Wednesday (clearly my favorite day of the week!)

My wine this week is a little different, but from another Okanagan winery: Here is how Lock & Worth describe this wine:
"1.5 acres. Naramata. Sand. Whole cluster pressed (3 hours of skin contact). Raised in neutral French oak for 6 months. No fining or filtration.
Alpine strawberry, white cranberry, red apple skin. Dry, crisp, bright and cloudy with a chance of solids"

So they do say that because the wine isn't filtered, there could be some residue.

This is from Lock & Worth Winery - Cabernet Franc Rose $20.

March 2015 Beauteque Mask Maven - New Mask Subscription Review

Beauteque is an American company that focuses on creating a beauty bag with Asian Beauty products. Beauteque launched their BB Bag Subscription in January and announced last month that they would be offering a new mask subscription - March is the first month!

The Mask Maven subscription is described as:
"The Mask Maven is a luxurious subscription service offering a lovely assortment of masks each month to keep your skin smooth, soft, and spectacular.
You will receive all kinds of masks including face sheet masks, hand and feet masks, hair masks, wash off masks, and more."

Beauteque Mask Maven is $15 monthly - if you sign up for a longer subscription, you can save a little money: $14 per month if you sign up for 6 months, or $13 per month if you sign up for 12 months). Shipping per month is $3.95 for the U.S., $5.95 to Canada, and $8.95 to Europe.

Each month you can expect to receive 9-11 masks of all varieties (they did announce for March that there would be 10 masks), and also because I signed up for a 3 month subscription when it was first announced, I will receive an extra mask in each month!

Here is a look at the first Mask Maven:

This pouch came in a mailer and arrived much quicker than what I am used to with Beauteque!

Okay, you know it's been a crazy Monday when I am writing my Manicure Monday post this late and I'm using nail wraps (this is why I have a big supply!). So, sorry it has been a crazy day.

Here are the products I used for this week's Manicure:

  • OPI Top Coat
  • Formula X Nail Cleanser and Base Coat

Skincare Sunday - Weekly Make-up Brush Cleansing

I posted last week about how important it is to clean your make-up brushes - it helps take care of your skin! If you missed my Skincare Sunday post last week, you can view it here (it's all about a daily brush care routine), so this week we will focus on my weekly brush cleaning routine!

Again, I cannot stress enough how important good brush care is! It cleans all the residue and gunk collected over the week and gets ride of it so it doesn't clog your pores and leads to break-ups! It can be done quickly, and is so worth it!

Here is the one product I use weekly for my brush cleaning:

Baby shampoo - it is very gentle and I use it on all my brushes! I just use the generic brand and it is very inexpensive!

Wine + Mask Wednesday (Sleeping Giant Blueberry Wine + Mizon King to the Kong No. 1 Moist King Berry Mask Sheet)

Alright, I can't be the only wine-o in the blogging world! You guys should know by now, that I think I have made Wednesdays awesome! Who doesn't want to celebrate making it to mid-week with a glass of wine and a good skin refresher?! I know it makes me look forward to Wednesdays!

My wine this week is from another amazing Okanagan fruit winery:

Sleeping Giant Blueberry Wine ~ $15.
Sleeping Giant is on the "Bottleneck Drive" wine route through Summerland, B.C. - if you every get a chance, there is some amazing wineries on this route! I love going to Sleeping Giant because it is attached to a syrup/jam factory "Summerland Sweets" - where I took a look of school field trips as a kid!

Skincare Sunday - Daily Brush Cleaning

One of the most important ways to care for your skin is to care for your brushes - they require daily and weekly cleaning! So important - if you don't clean them, then all the junk and build-up will just go back on to your skin and will definately cause break-outs!

This week, I will focus on the basic daily care (next Sunday I will show you my weekly cleansing routine).

You need:

1. Make-up Brush
2. Face cloth/clean towel
3. Daily Brush Cleanser

This post contains referral links

Beauty Box 5 is a monthly subscription box that costs $12 US per month + $3 shipping to Canada. If you sign up for a longer subscription, you get a lower price per box: $30 quarterly, and $99 a year ( plus $3 shipping per month).

Beauty Box 5 has been referred to as the"starter beauty box" - it does not send many high end products and the value tends to be lower than other boxes, but they have sent out really good products!

*As of late, Beauty Box 5's boxes have been very up and down - they have had some great products; however, there have been very low box values and not so good products. I would suggest that you read reviews and see if it is products you like!*

Skincare Sunday: American Toner vs. Korean Toners

Having dry skin, for the longest time I never used toners. Most American brands and very astringent and made my dry skin much worse! I tried a few brands, but nothing that didn't dry out my skin - so I left this step out of my skincare routine!

When I started receiving Memeboxes last year, one of my first boxes came with a toner. I almost passed it on without trying it; but, as I was doing research in to some of the new products I had never heard of, I found out how different American toners are from Korean toners!

Korean skincare considers Toning to be an essential step in skincare. Korean toners are described as pH balancers and moisturizing - compared to American toners generally meant to strip the skin of oils and be a further cleanser.

This makes sense why my dry skin did not respond well to American toners - it just made my skin more dry! It also explains why the added layer of a Korean toner has helped improve the dryness in my skin!

One of the most important ingredients to look for is alcohol - it is incredibly drying to your skin! Most Korean toners should not contain alcohol as they are meant to be moisturizing, but this may not be true for all of them!

Here are the two toners I am currently using:

I think with the influx of Korean skincare everywhere, American brands may be a little more cautious with the ingredients to make them more comparable!
